Looking for a Natural Health Practitioner in St. Cloud, MN? Six Questions to Ask Before Winter
October is a better starting point than January, and there is no plan year to wait for. Six questions worth asking any natural health practice in St. Cloud, including ours.
January gets all the attention. New year, fresh start, the holidays finally behind you. It is the month most of us promise ourselves we will finally deal with how we have been feeling.
We would gently suggest October instead.
By January you have already spent the darkest, busiest stretch of the Minnesota year running on whatever you had left. Starting in the fall means going into winter with a plan rather than coming out of it looking for one. And since we do not bill insurance, there is no plan year to wait for and no deductible math to time it around. You can simply begin.
If you are weighing your options for a natural health practitioner in St. Cloud, MN, here is what we would ask any practice you are considering, including ours.
1. What exactly happens in a first appointment?
Any good practice can tell you this before you book. How long it takes, what is done, whether anything is uncomfortable, and what you leave with. If you cannot get a straight answer on the phone, that tells you something.
2. How do they decide what to recommend?
Everyone has a method. Some work from an intake conversation, some from lab work, some from screening. Ask what theirs is, and ask them to explain it in words you understand. Anyone who cannot explain their own approach without jargon may not be able to explain your results either.
Ours is electro-dermal screening, followed by personalized nutrition counseling based on what it shows. It is non-invasive and painless, it suits every age, and it gives us a starting point rather than a verdict. It is not a medical test and it does not diagnose or treat disease.
3. What does it cost, and will they tell you up front?
Holistic health and wellness in St. Cloud should not require a decoder ring to price out, particularly in a season when the heating bill is climbing and the holidays are coming. Ask for the number before you go. Ours is simple and transparent, and because we do not bill insurance, there is no claim to file and no statement arriving later. If several people in your household need to be seen, ask about package pricing. We offer family discounts for exactly that reason.
4. Will they work alongside your doctor?
Natural health is not a replacement for medical care, and any practitioner who tells you to abandon your physician is one to walk away from. We are a complement to the care you already receive, not a substitute for it, and we are glad for you to share anything we discuss with your doctor.
5. What are their credentials, and how long have they been here?
Ask about certifications, and ask how long they have practiced in the area. Longevity in a town the size of St. Cloud is a form of accountability. Stepping Stone opened in 2003. Kathy Hagemeister founded it and her daughter-in-law Sara runs it now. Both are Certified Natural Health Professionals; Kathy is also a Certified Chiropractic Technician and Certified EDS Technician, and Sara holds a B.S. in Health and Physical Education and an M.Ed.
6. Do they actually listen?
The one that matters most and the hardest to check in advance. Pay attention to the first phone call. Were you rushed? Did anyone ask about you, or only about scheduling? You are going to tell this person things you may not have told anyone, and you should feel heard while you do it.
What we would want for our own family
Someone close to home. Someone who explains things without talking down. A price we can see in advance. And the same patience for a worn-out forty-year-old in November as for a fussy toddler.
That is the practice we have tried to run for more than twenty years.
